Craft is an Organ.
As an overview of contemporary crafts of the world, the main exhibition focuses on the essential quality of craft and its sustainability in the future. Craft, like an organic creature, has evolved throughout human civilization, and, due to its inherent use value, is still evolving, gaining new values for today’s new context. Craft is a mediating agent posited in a progressive state, crossing borders between different genres and different media ? such is the epitome of organic. The main exhibition will explore five definitions of craft represented by the five letters “O.R.G.A.N.”
Unlike conventional categorizations of craft by material (wood, ceramic, metal, fiber), these five descriptions provide multiple lenses through which we can find varied aspects of today’s craft. 2011 Cheongju International Craft Biennale shows 875 craft?design works including Korean traditional musical instruments, artworks of 189 artists all over the world and craft?design products of 6 companies and institutions. The main exhibition spans customization of handmade, mass-produced, and artisanal crafts in order to reaffirm the multi-dimensional aspects of craft shaped by tradition and that continue to shape traditions to come.
